The distinctive characteristic is the popular use on the hypóskapha: extensions of residences dug sideways or downwards to the bordering pumice. These rooms are prized due to the significant insulation provided by the air-loaded pumice, and so are employed as dwelling quarters of distinctive coolness in the summer and warmth during the Wintertime.
